Problem with non-English characters (28.Feb 2008)
Relay has serious problems with non-English characters. Tried adding a folder with Norwegian letters in the name (3 non-English ones in Norwegian), the result was a folder that was unusable and undeletable.
Relay hangs when selecting uploaded files in quick succession to generate previews
Date: May 3, 2008
Version: RELAY 1.0 beta 071706.
NOTE: I'm type my posting here, as I can't figure out how to open an new article within this Wiki.
Running the latest version of Relay 1.0 beta, I've noticed the following behaviour:
-1- Upload a couple of files, say 10. Upload a mix of JPG, GIF, BMP, PNG and PDF files. It doesn't matter if you upload the files individually or batch-wise;
-2- Once uploaded, click the individual files in rapid succession, to generate previews of supported filetypes, in this case all of the uploaded files;
-3- Having selected the first few files:
- the Ajax spinner in the File Information tab of the Control Panel remains animated, - selecting the remaining uploaded files has no apparent effect, - another Ajax spinner is visible in the folder header of the folder the files were uploaded to - Relay seems to have froozen, as it no longer responds to actions in the UI.
I have observed this behaviour on my development site, and on the Relay demosite.
I'm running:
- Apache 2.2.8;
- PHP 5.2.5;
- MySQL 5.0.51a;
I have tried to increase memory_limit from 128M to 256M in php.ini, without satisfying results.
Further, I've noticed:
- some uploaded PDF's got their filename changed to <filename>.pdftemp after uploading;
- after restarting Apache, attempting to delete the uploaded files results in the blue selection bar to move one line down without visually deleting the file;
For suggestions please contact: eric dot p dot winter attttt gmail dot com.

Problem 15 Aug 27 2007; ofanged1 [at] gmail [dot] com
During Initial Setup, I receive the following error:
Verifying Perl Installation... for the upload script @ http://XX.XX.XX.XX/relay/upload.pl?test ...the upload.pl script seems to be having problems. Try chmod 755 to upload. You may also need to change the 1st line to reflect the path to your perl installation, or in iis map the .pl extension to the perl executable. You may need to enable mod_cgi for .pl files. Look at the Relay Wiki on this topic for more troupshooting.
I have exhausted all possible solutions I can find. When I tail /var/log/httpd/error_log I find:

Problem: 16 Aug; website at net-K[dot]us
During initial setup, I get the following error.
Database Connected.... done Dropping tables if the exist...done Creating tables
- relay_clients...Specified key was too long; max key length is 1000 bytes could not create the table clients
I can't find any info on the website that covers this error, but I may just be missing it.
Thanks.
Responses can be sent to wolfmank[at]gmail[dot]com Bold text I fixed this by replacing "default-character-set=utf-8" with "default-character-set=latin1" in my my.cnf. You can probably you specify that only your relay database should be latin1 -Kristoffer (See [[1]])
I got past this error by setting the character set for the relay database to latin1 (I probably have a server default of utf8). I didn't want to change the setting server wide. Just run a command like this ALTER DATABASE relay DEFAULT CHARACTER SET latin1; -Dave
How DO Fix Problem 15 ?! IN FreeBSD & Use lighttpd at root
- export PATH_TRANSLATED="yourRelayPath" (NOT ROOTPATH)
- restart your lighttpd and you will get problem 16 ... =_=

SOLUTION 10/15/2006 moREMOVEritz DOT mahREMOVEling(then THE symbol)gmaREMOVE THISil.com The problem is not your server configuration - it's inside the script install/index.php:

}else if(isset($_SERVER['PATH_TRANSLATED'])){
$rootpath = $_SERVER['PATH_TRANSLATED'];

Problem 7/26/2006 f e r b o[at]g m x . n e t I don't know how to " enable mime-magic or the fileinfo extention"...
Solution Open relay/install/index.php search for file_get_contents (should be line 401) replace
$response = file_get_contents($uploadPath);
with
$ch = curl_init(); $timeout = 5; // set to zero for no timeout curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $uploadPath); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT, $timeout); $response = curl_exec($ch); curl_close($ch);
upload the new file and everything should be golden.
Fixed
Problem: mike@modevia.com. I am a host helping a client configure Relay. I find that the code that determines the $rootpath doesn't work very well. On our Apache configuration, PATH_TRANSLATED is set, but blank- so you really want Relay to use SCRIPT_FILENAME. But because Relay asks: "if(isset($_SERVER['PATH_TRANSLATED']))", it tries to use PATH_TRANSLATED anyway. And since it's blank, it hoses everything.
Solution: I'm not sure what best practice is. To get this client up and running, I commented out everything BUT "$rootpath = $_SERVER['SCRIPT_FILENAME'];". Maybe you want to say if (isset($blah) AND $blah!="") ?? Not sure. Hope this helps someone. (For reference, that code exists twice: once in /index.php and once in /install/index.php.)
FIXED: Version 071706
Problem 7/26/2006 f e r b o[at]g m x . n e t I can't install Relay... I've tried several way... No result... I don't know what I should else do. I've got these error message: Warning: file_get_contents(http://SERVER/upload.pl?test): failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error in /var/SERVER/index.php on line 401 the upload.pl script seems to be having problems. Try chmod 755 to upload. You may also need to change the 1st line to reflect the path to your perl installation, or in iis map the .pl extension to the perl executable. You may need to enable mod_cgi for .pl files. Look at the Relay Wiki on this topic for more troupshooting.
mod_cgi is, according to phpinfo(), a loaded module. I've added "AddHandler cgi-script cgi pl" to my http.conf. uploads.pl has got chmod 777.
as above:
Solution Open relay/install/index.php search for file_get_contents (should be line 401) replace
$response = file_get_contents($uploadPath);
with
$ch = curl_init(); $timeout = 5; // set to zero for no timeout curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $uploadPath); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT, $timeout); $response = curl_exec($ch); curl_close($ch);
upload the new file and everything should be golden.
Problem: 7/21/2006 chris.defelice[at]gmail.com problems getting Relay installed and configured:
During installation I am receiving the following error with the relay root directory chmod to 755:
"Warning: fopen(/home/blameth/public_html/relay/conf.inc.php): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/[SERVER]/public_html/relay/install/index.php on line 382
/home/[SERVER]/public_html/relay/conf.inc.php can not open"
If I chmod the relay root directory to 777 I receive the following different error:
Warning: file_get_contents(http://www.[SERVER].com/relay/upload.pl?test): failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error in /home/[SERVER]/public_html/relay/install/index.php on line 401
the upload.pl script seems to be having problems. Try chmod 755 to upload. You may also need to change the 1st line to reflect the path to your perl installation, or in iis map the .pl extension to the perl executable. You may need to enable mod_cgi for .pl files. Look at the Relay Wiki on this topic for more troupshooting.
I also get this error in my website's error log: error: directory is writable by others: (/home/[SERVER]/public_html/relay)
So it won't let me complete the install unless I have the relay root directory chmod to 777 and it also won't let me complete the install if the relay root directory is chmod to 777. Quite a paradox...
Solution: try where apache is the name of the username your server uses.
chown apache upload.pl chmod 755 upload.pl
- I tried that but it says I don't have permission to change ownership of the directory. I'll try having my host change it for me. -chris
Problem: Do I really need an Active Directory server to get Relay up and running? I just left those fields blank and click "Submit Query" and this is what I get:
Solution: FIXED IN VERSION 063006.1Just download the latest version and that problem should be fixed.
Problem: I get this output when I try installing: Verifying Perl Installation... for the upload script @ http://127.0.0.1/relay/upload.pl?test ...the upload.pl script seems to be having problems, you may need to change the 1st line to reflect the path to your perl installation, or in iis map the .pl extension to the perl executable. You may need to enable mod_cgi for .pl files
I have perl installed in /usr/bin/perl and mod_cgi is enabled in Apache. (This must be a busy day for you.)
No worries Apache just isn't interperting the .pl extention as a cgi-script. In you apache config just add the following line
AddHandler cgi-script cgi pl
or you can
AllowOverride All
that allows the bundled .htaccess file to control the cgi handler. Give that a try.
Totally n00b questions Where do I put
AddHandler cgi-script cgi pl
?
httpd.conf: which is your apache configuration file. If you mean where in httpd.conf then it should go in your root directory's <directory> tag. httpd.conf MAY be located /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf
Solution I updated the file permissions and now everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for the help.
Problem: When I want to install, relay told my to install Fileinfo (pear install fileinfo) - I did that, but then there was this Problem:
... checking for gawk... gawk checking for fileinfo support... yes, shared checking for magic files in default path... found in /usr/include checking for magic_open in -lmagic... no configure: error: wrong magic lib version or lib not found `/tmp/tmpuuICTl/Fileinfo-0.3/configure' failed
so I installed this line: apt-get install libmagic-dev libmagic1 php5-dev libltdl3-dev libmagick6-dev libmagick6
after that I tried again to install fileinfo and it runs.
after that, relay only display the header.
Server is a Debian Sarge.
Trouble Shooting could you post a link or email me David Barshow the location of your relay installation so I can try and fiqure out what is going on. One thing to check is to make sure you dont have a conf.inc.php, because if you do the installation will not run.
Problem: Though compatibility with MySQL 4+ is claimed, the installation script issues an incompatible parameter.
Solution: :In install/index.php, edit line 212 from "ENGINE=MyISAM" to "TYPE=MyISAM"
Fixed

Problem: LDAP mode not installed even AD option is sellected.
Sollution: at line 153 of install/index.php file, it should be: $_POST[`uad`] == `yes` instead of $_POST[`uad`] == `on`
Problem: 9/20/06 How do I manually enter the path to ImageMagik? I have it installed and working for Gallery2, but cannot get relay to acknowledge it, and therefore have no thumbnails for my images. Also, can other filetypes (like mpeg) be added and additional utility binaries (like ffmpeg for thumbnails of mpeg files) be manually added, or added in the next release?
Problem: 11/07/06
User:Wirerydr The 'install/index.php' script will always indicate that a problem exists when testing the upload.pl script, if Relay is installed into an SSL-enabled documentRoot. This is because the URI scheme is hard-coded to "http", and so the resulting URL will point to a non-existent path. The following patch updates 'install/index.php' to use either "http" or "https" as the URI scheme depending on whether $_SERVER['HTTPS'] is empty or not. I can't attest to its portability (sorry, not a PHP / Apache expert), but it works in my LAMP environment:

Functionality Problems
Problem 09/23/2007 User: User:Trilo When I upload more than 224 files the file description does not work properly. I can still add file descriptions and categories (normal, hot, emergency), but when I hit update the descriptions vanish. This problem does not affect the first 224 files that I uploaded. The problem starts with the 225th file. Is this a problem of MySQL? Or a timeout problem?
Solution: Open
Problem 09/13/2007 User: User:Trilo If you delete a whole directory, there is no update in the database for each file contained in that directory. So you can still search for that dir and its files. Also the "Relay-update-function" does not check inconsistency of files that are deleted outside Relay, so again these files are still searchable.
Solution: Delete "\" before "%" in line 585 of relay.php: $query = "delete from $GLOBALS[tablePrefix]filesystem where path like \"$deleteDir%\"";
Fixed
Problem 7/26/2006 t o d d b g[at]g m a i l . c o m Download cart zip function is only zipping and downloading one item instead of all items in the cart. E-mail function however does e-mail all files in the cart so it seems as though this is related to JUST the zip functionality. Everything else at my installation is working in firefox.
Solution well, this is a ram issue. Currently php holds all the files in ram when it creates the zip file. This will get fixed in a future version.
Fixed
Problem: I successfully installed and configured relayb01-063006.zip, but noticed there were not directory collapse and expand arrow graphics in mine as is in the live demo.
Solution: FIXED IN VERSION 063006.1
Note: Issue seen again with IE7, reason unknown.
Problem: Is there a way to sort the files in a directory alphabetically? Or by date?
Solution: there is no way to do this without modifying the sql statment, which is easy. Just change line 345 of relay.php(it may be around line 345) to $query = "select *,date_format(`date`,\"$dateFormat\") as `dateformatted` from $GLOBALS[tablePrefix]filesystem where path=\"$fullpath\" and status=\"found\" order by `filename`";
Problem: Sorting directories alphabetically.
Solution: To sort directories, replace the if statement on line 332 (version 071706) with the following.
if (is_dir($fullpath)) {
if ($dh = opendir($fullpath)) {
$files = array();
while (($file = readdir($dh)) !== false) {
if($file != '.' && $file != '..' && filetype($fullpath . '/' . $file) == 'dir' ){
$files[] = $file; }}
sort($files);
foreach($files as $file) {
jsonAdd("\"type\": \"directory\", \"name\": \"$file\", \"path\": \"$path/$file\"");
}
closedir($dh);
}
}
Problem: 8/26/06 Cannot preview gif files. I tried adding |image\/gif to the list of image types. I get a large sqaure black image. gs and convert are both working correctly and I get previews for png, jpg, pdf files with no problem.
Problem: 8/26/06 The date is not getting formatted. The confi.inc.php shows the format at "%b,%e %Y %h:%i %p". I am getting the standard mysql date of YYYYMMDDHHMMSS in one string.
Solution: Looks like the formatted date is not used in the meta information, only in the directory listing
Problem: 8/31/06 -rpm Upload button does not work unless a folder is selected. Can the first folder be the default? Or potentially select another folder in the code to be the default?
Solution: Add this to js/relay.js
if (this.path == "/filestore") this.select();
after
eval("var jsonObject = ("+json_data+")");
in the getContents_handler
Problem: 9/02/06 The upload button doesn't appear most of the times in Konqueror (last version of KDE 3.5.4). And when it appears it doesn't work, it seems not to be clickable so I can't upload files. I think that the text box is too width and "hides" the upload button.
Problen: 9/7/06 When I try to download pdf files, it gives error {"bindings": [ {'error': "no files zipped"} ]} However, if I change the extension of the pdf to something else, it appears to be working.
Problem: 9/16/06 When I upload multiple files all the files in that directory become hidden. The still exist on the server but can not be seen in the Relay application. Any Ideas?
dom 9/23/06 : I have the same issue, I can't see the files in a directory when I expand this directory. I have checked permissions, uploading was fine but no way to see files under directories
wed 02/21/07: There is another problem: an INSERT INTO loop. System: Linux hm449 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp - Apache 2.0 - PHP 5.1.5 - MySQL 5.0.26 - Perl 8.1 - Relay 0.1 Beta
fri 05/25/07: still having this problem, appears that the only time this happens is when uploading to a virtual directory. If you upload multiple files to a folder in a virtual directory the file list still displays. Any eta on a fix for this?
thurs 10/11/07: two items seem to be related... this multiple files upload issue plus when i upload one file the folder on the right doesn't automatically refresh (i have to hit update). using apache server. it has to be a server setting because the Relay demo works just fine (it does both multiple uploads and automatic refresh upon upload)... any suggestions as to why this is happening or what setting would effect this?
Problem: 9/19/06 On lighttpd 1.4.10, using the following in lighttpd.conf:
cgi.assign = ( ".pl" => "/usr/bin/perl",
".cgi" => "/usr/bin/perl" )
the upload progress bar does not update until upload is 100% complete.
Problem: 9/25/06 I'm using Windows where I installed XAMPP. I have relay installed and it kind of works. I can create users, I can log in, I can download files, etc. The problem is that when I hit the "arrow" to drop down the filelist on a virtual directory, all the files (not directories) show an extra copy with a new timestamp. In the filesystem, there still exists only one file, but this makes relay messy and slow to load all the duplicates of everytime I've dropped the arrow for every directory. If you'd like more info, please email me at xburnerxATgmail

Problem: 6th October 2006 Relay does not work properly with Internet Explorer 7. After logging on, a massive search button spanning the whole length of the window covers the banner at the top. (From Ben Stokes).
Solution IE7 fix: 19th Januari 2007 To fix the IE7 searchbar bug there is a minor changes needed in the ralay.css file located in the map css.
Add width:75px; to the following section:
#searchbtn {
position:absolute;
top:12px;
right:5px;
}
If you're experiencing some viewing problems with the top bar images try to save the corresponding png to an 8 bit depth.
Problem: 10th October 2006 File creation-dates rather than modification-dates Would be nice to have file creation-dates displayed. Trying to hack this by using filemdate in relay.php script and changing the mod-dates on the server manually. This works fine for the meta-fileinfo but cant get it to work in the directory-section. If anybody happens to be dealing with the desire to contol the date-display, lmk in here, Timo Hofmeijer. Example getFileInfo() (working):
$filePath = $fileinfo['path']; $fileName = $fileinfo['filename'];
$fileinfo['date'] = date("d m Y H:i:s", filemtime($filePath.'/'.$fileName));
Problem: 10/16/06 On clicking Directory arrows, only certain directories expand to show files in them. and sometimes not all sub-directories can be expanded to view files. very temperamental love the script but this is bugging me. cheers!.
Problem: 10/19/06 when upload big files ( > 350Mo ), upload.pl script crash => "Premature end of script headers: upload.pl" and for the client, the download progress stop at 99%.
Solution: Check out the faq there is a rewritten Perl script that should solve the problem
Problem: 11/22/06 User:MarKel I think its a bug (or feature). When i try to download a file from a read-only folder u can't 'drag' the files to the download cart BUT u can download them by clicking on the file OR use the add to cart option.
Is this perhaps a permission-problem ?. If u have write-access to the same folder the problem doesn't show
Problem: 28th Nov 06 from ben aaatttt redbeard dot org dot uk having a similar problem to post somewhere above: download progress stop at 99%, and file is left in the tmp directory, upload not complete.
2 things about this:
- tmp file is bigger than original - it only happens to files bigger than 6.2mb.
Would be very happy if someone was able to suggest a UK shared hosting package that will work with relay. Tried it on 1and1 and namesco, no joy. Can't debug server logs either. thanks, B
I Get the same problem when uploading files larger than 6.2Mb progress stalls at 99%
Solution: 15th April 08 Check Out the Faq there is a rewritten perl script
PROBLEM 6/052006From team-k9.net Problem with upload that stalls here as well. With files even bigger than 2mb it crashes it stops at 99%. The uploader bar isn't always working perfectly as well... Sometimes it shows as /s only, other stuff misses.
PROBLEM 2006/DEC/13From visionwebservices.com Search box in IE7 is not rendered properly. In fact, I see no search box and the Search button is MASSIVE.
SOLUTION See identical problem above, IE7 has a problem with search buttons that contain 18 or more characters of text.
PROBLEM 2007/JAN/10From --Wallenium Got the following error (as admin) when i try to download a file of a subuser... (as explanation: i have admin rights on the root filepath, not on the folders in the root filepath... this should work, as an admin of the filepath root you must be able to be admin of all folders in it. is that right? {"bindings": [ {'error': "access denied to 1166797238"} ]} if i enable admin of the fileroot/anotherfolder, i'm not seeing any files in the fileroot-folder.
PROBLEM 2007/JAN/20 From davelindsay atttttttt gmail d0t com Large file downloads seem to time-out after about 2 minutes of transfer. The progress bar suddenly jumps to 'complete' but the downloaded file is not the same size as what's on the server. Perhaps this is unique to my web host (Dreamhost) - I modified index.php int the install directory to accommodate the CURL patch (again,
PROBLEM 2007/DEZ/07 From daniel.koch.de atttttttt gmail d0t com I have a problem uploading files. My Server (Debian 4.0) runs PHP 5.2.1 with FastCGI. The installation worked fine and upload.pl?test results "ok". Also I am able to create folders and virtual hosts. But if I try to upload a file the process bar shows "Canceled 0" or "0.0% 0 0" and nothing happens. Do you have any solution for this problem?
PROBLEM 2008/APR/18 From kanonvallen atttttttt gmail d0t com I have a problem accessing admin panel. When I click on the link all I get is a blank page. Opened the index.php in management folder and I get a Internal 500 error in IE7.0. In Firefox, can I see a code mixed with a webpage. It looks all corrupted. What is wrong?
Solution: 15th April 08 After a long time I found that I all <? needed to be replaced with <?php in index.php. Everything works properly now!
PROBLEM 2008/AUG/18 From Ben Stokes I am unable to get Relay working on Debian Etch, Apache 2, mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.32 and PHP5. The packages are unmodified from the Debian repositories. I'm getting:
the upload.pl script seems to be having problems. Try chmod 755 to upload. You may also need to change the 1st line to reflect the path to your perl installation, or in iis map the .pl extension to the perl executable. You may need to enable mod_cgi for .pl files. Look at the Relay Wiki on this topic for more troupshooting.
I have this in my error.log:
[Mon Aug 04 14:32:58 2008] [error] [client 192.168.0.1] Can't locate /var/www/mydomain/relay/conf.uploader in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.8 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at /var/www/mydomain/relay/upload.pl line 8.
