Error 80240029 Windows Defender Update

If windows update is failing to update with the error code 80240029. Take the following steps to fix it.

Open the “Windows Update” from the control panel.
Click “change settings” on the left bar.
Turn windows update off completely. Never check for updates and uncheck use windows update.
Go back to “Windows Update” and click “Check for updates” on the left side. This will get all the new updates you need, including those for Windows Defender.

After all this is done I was able to re-enable windows updates without any problems. I hope this helped you, it took me days to find the answer.

Even Works in Vista! After disabling it even found some updates for the OS!

Woah – you totally rock. I couldn’t work out how to fix this other than deleting the Software Distribution folder in Safe mode. Great job.

Note that Windows Update and Defender Update seems to be mutually exclusive before your fix.
